Moving to Newcastle in 2013, Bec Paule-Font brings a diverse background to her role as a lawyer. Before transitioning to law, she pursued careers as a musician and an investigator for the NSW Government. Admitted as a lawyer in 2019, she has worked in mid-sized firms in Newcastle, focusing her practice on Family Law and Commercial matters. She enjoys both in equal measure – and loves that every matter is unique and challenging in their own respect.

Bec was attracted to law because she likes to help people; she enjoys the privilege of entering people’s lives at a critical juncture, removing the emotional burden, and helping them navigate their problems.

In her work, she finds fulfilment in advocating for clients who feel voiceless and securing good outcomes for them. Bec’s definition of success varies from case to case but believes that landing on a fair result is generally a successful outcome. If she could change one thing about law, it would be in providing access to justice for the 80% or so of people who aren’t eligible for legal aid but can’t afford a lawyer.

Bec has a very keen interest in parental alienation cases, and financial matters involving non-disclosure. She had one such case recently; and was successful in an application for change of residence and sole parental responsibility. This was life changing for the client and the subject child. A good day at work for Bec is when she can mash together creativity and intellect to problem solve and produce a favourable outcome.

At Masons, Bec appreciates the welcoming atmosphere, experienced colleagues, and engaging matters that the firm offers. If there were an award for organised chaos around the office, Bec would undoubtedly be a strong contender.

“Justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, but in finding out the right and upholding it, wherever found, against the wrong.”

Feedback from clients and judges alike have praised Bec’s calm, empathetic, and respectful approach to her work. She has had a client say, “I feel like you’re the first lawyer I’ve ever had that gets me” and recently received this comment from a Judge “you could’ve turned this complicated matter into a circus; your calm, empathetic and respectful approach is to be applauded”.

Outside of work, Bec enjoys spending time with her family, including her two young daughters and her dog (her fur-child). Weekends often involve family outings, road trips, and swimming adventures around Lake Macquarie. In her downtime, Bec indulges in hobbies such as tennis, reading (whenever she can find the time), and playing the piano, and if she could, she would love to learn the flute.

On the quirky side, Bec’s secret superpower is her ability to sing Blackalicious’ Alphabet Aerobics. She also possesses niche expertise in geography and classical music written prior to 1900. Her favourite book is “The Book Thief,” she enjoys listening to anything by Debussy, and her top movie pick is “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Looking forward, Bec has an upcoming trip to Alaska and dreams of visiting Greenland someday.

When asked about her food loves/hates, Bec says she can eat endless amounts of pasta, but is allergic to seafood, which is probably a good thing because it looks/smells disgusting to her. As for how her family would describe her in three words. That’s a mystery yet to be solved.
