I haven’t lived in Newcastle all that long – my wife and I moved here 5 years ago to support our daughter and grandson. Prior to that, we have lived in lots of different places, including Tweed Heads, Broken Hill and Scotts Head.

Despite really enjoying maths and physics at school, I sort of “fell into” being a lawyer because my parents could not afford to send me to university. Instead, I worked hard at lots of jobs (fruit picking, cleaning, bar work) before joining the public service and becoming a Court Clerk. After starting work for the court, I decided that I liked applying myself to a different area than my usual interests and I started studying to be a lawyer.

I have worked as a barrister for the past 16 years in both QLD and NSW. Barristers generally end up being briefed in more complex court matters so I did enjoy the challenge. However, I missed speaking to clients and hearing their stories, so I decided to come back to where I started in 1990 working as a solicitor again.

I really enjoy helping people, and I also like the competitive nature of going to court.

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my wife and family, reading and watching football. I barrack for the St George Illawarra Dragons – my uncle played a few first grade games for them so I have followed them (I was going to say “thick and thin” but it’s been mostly thin!).
